Bottle Loss Got You Blue? Battle Back With Bottle Locks
In a June 6 , 2015 Washington post story, a man stole nearly $2,000 worth of alcohol in under 8 minutes from a liquor store. July 8, 2015 Jackson Hole News & Guide had story on a man who stole 3 bottles of top shelf liquor, “Grey Goose” (price range $20 – $60 a bottle). Malt Beverage Distributors Association of Pennsylvania in an April 21, 2014 story reported on a distributor in Wray, Washington State that installed locking cabinets due to thefts they were experiencing of $800 – $1,000 a week. As I considered the last story, I wanted to tell the store owner, there are alternatives to a locking cabinet! Did you even consider looking into liquor bottle security products?
Alpha Security products offer bottle locks that are easy to install and remove for a retailer and provide a deterrent to shoplifting. Locks can come in adjustable bottle collars, “Steel Grip” collars with a metal band, clear bottle caps that permit viewing of labels, as well as other designs. The removal of the lock at the point of sale is easy and will not significantly add to the time of checkout. Business owners are well aware that in today’s fast paced world of mobile technology, and immediate accessibility, customers do not want to be slowed down in a checkout line.
How important is it for a business to consider using Alpha Security products? Consider this, according to the 2014 Global Retail Theft Barometer, retail shortage in North America equated to 1.48% of sales. In 2014 38% of shortage was attributable to shoplifting. The report also states that one of the most stolen categories of merchandise overall is wine and spirits and not only that, in the grocery category it is the number one shortage item. When employee theft is added to the equation, over 65% of shortage incurred by retailers is due to theft! What would it mean to your bottom line if you could reduce your losses by well over 50%? How much could you reduce that amount simply by using liquor bottle security in your store?
Recently I was in a major retail store and I was curious to see what kind of Alpha Security devices, if any, they were using. I was shocked to see that despite carrying wines and champagnes ranging in price from $10 to $60 a bottle, there were no bottle locks on any of the products. Knowing that this retailer uses Alpha Security devices on other items to decrease the opportunity for theft, I was surprised to see no steps had been taken in regard to bottle security. If a big box retailer fails to protect their wine section what are smaller liquor stores doing to prevent theft?
If the stories I referred to in the beginning of this article are any indicator, it would seem liquor stores may be taking the wrong steps or worse no steps at all to protect product. Liquor bottle security does not mean putting everything under lock and key, bottle locks are a far better solution. Lock- up cases requires an associate to be readily available with a key. Customers don’t like to wait for service and if you operate a smaller store, you may not have the staff to run a register and open showcases for multiple patrons. When customers feel they are going to have to wait for a long time, whether or not they really will, those customers will go elsewhere. Your merchandise may be protected, but if you aren’t selling anything then what’s the point?
Liquor bottle security is a problem that can be solved without hindering your honest customers. Using bottle locks permits the customer to select merchandise and take what they want to the register. You have the peace of mind knowing that the locks are extremely difficult to tamper with and can work with an EAS system if you have one installed. You don’t need to go to extremes to prevent shortage, just use bottle locks.

Fun Is In The Air
When going out for a night on the town with friends, most people are looking for a night of fun and relaxation. If they’re going to go out with a group to a bar or nightclub, one fantastic option many customers now look for is bottle service. A lot of places don’t consider offering this option, however, because they don’t know all the benefits it offers their customers. Many bar owners look at bottle service as high maintenance and they don’t think their patrons will buy in. If they would simply weigh the pros and cons of this big money maker, they would see that it is well worth it.
Bottle service means the group gets a specific table where they have guaranteed seats for the night. The catch for them is that they must purchase one or more bottles of high end liquor. These bottles mean big profits for the business and most likely, big tips for the waitress assigned to the table. The gratuity may be included in the price of the table for the night, but it is well worth it. They also get to have all the glasses and mixers readily available and their waitress will pour their drinks for them. Now, in many states it is illegal for people to pour their own drinks anyway, but if you think about it, that wouldn’t be a viable option anyway. As a nightclub owner or manager, you would never want your customers pouring and mixing their own concoctions. Every night you would have that one person in the group that would inevitably ruin the party for everyone else. They would pour their drinks super strong and they would become intoxicated way too fast.
You can’t just put the bottles on the tables though, and walk away. Rules are rules, but if the bottles were left unattended, trouble would ensue. You could buy expensive old fashioned tables that have locking compartments for the liquors, but that would eat into your profits. The better, smarter solution is to equip your wait staff with the EASy bottle system. This includes bottle locks that attach to almost any size liquor bottle and secures them shut. The waitress can monitor the number of drinks each person in the group is served and watch for anyone becoming intoxicated. It would be unethical and immoral, not to mention illegal, to continue to serve someone alcohol that is already drunk. With bottle service, that problem is much easier to control.
The cost of a DWI to a customer is huge. The fines, lawyer fees, increased cost of insurance, and any liability charges are just a few contributors. The bar or nightclub that served that person can be held equally financially responsible in many states, if it can be proven that your staff continued to serve them after they had too much to drink. When you add bottle service, it can also be seen as a service to your community. It’s not the same as donating time to adopt-a-highway, but it does show that your business cares about your patrons. If you are able to monitor and realize that someone has had too much, you can quickly and easily call a service provider to get them home safely.
When you consider the high profit margin of the top shelf liquor bottle sales and added customer safety, the benefits of offering bottle service are clear.

Bottle Locks Can Assist Liquor Sellers
Four young men walked into a grocery store that sells liquor and stuffed their pants with over $700 worth of top shelf vodka, cognac and other spirits. Then they walked right out the door, completely undetected. In a retail environment where there are more customers in the store than employees, it is imperative to employ tools like bottle locks. Alpha security has designed these so that they make liquor bottle security quick and easy. They deter theft by letting the customer know as soon as they arrive that this store takes loss prevention seriously. If there is a successful snatch and grab, the bottle is still practically useless to the thief without the appropriate tool to remove the bottle lock. The bottle will more likely shatter before they can ever get the cap off.
Now that so many different types of stores sell liquor, thefts have risen exponentially. A trio of women went into a store and loaded up shoulder bags right before they bolted out the door. Another small group convinced the staff they worked for the distributor and told them they were there to perform a reset. They loaded up several grocery carts of bottles, and when the few employees got distracted, walked out the door and loaded up their vehicle with the stolen goods. As of this story, that group has not been caught. Even a single bottle here and there can be very detrimental to any store’s bottom line. Simple solutions, like bottle locks, could be implemented and the problem could be solved. When a store looks at their profit line vs their loss line, they have to decide what the solution is if they are losing money from lack of liquor bottle security. Many store managers and owners go with their first inclination to simply move the product. Now, I am an avid opponent of merchandising expensive and highly targeted items anywhere near the exit doors. Just look at high end jewelery stores. They would never put the good stuff at the front. The same should go for liquors and spirits. The only difference is it’s probably not a good idea to even house the cheap stuff near any exit. Those can start to add up as well. I do see the benefits of displaying these products near a register, and the section should always be under some form of surveillance. If possible, there should be an employee there monitoring the section at all times as well.
If that is not an option in your location, then it may be time to take a look into what bottle locks can do for your operation and peace of mind. If your store has not had a problem with liquor bottle security, your luck is sure to run out soon. You cannot expect to be as lucky as a police officer that recently pulled over an SUV for a minor traffic offense. As he approached the vehicle he could tell it was loaded down with boxes. Those boxes turned out to be full of liquor bottles, and the folks inside the vehicle were wanted in three counties for stealing more than $20,000 worth of liquor from area grocers and package stores. The group would conceal and remove ten or twelve bottles at a time, stride right out the door, and were never noticed by the store staff. Of course, later in the shift when they were straightening shelves, the employees would finally realize they had been hit. Thankfully, these guys are going to jail for a very long time and won’t be a problem anymore.

Business Booms With Bottle Service
Nightclubs and bars, like any other business operate because there is a demand for the service they offer. It may be the local bar down the street or swanky nightclubs catering to those who want to mingle, listen and dance to music and usually drink alcoholic beverages. Most customers in these establishments do drink and behave themselves. Some people seek a V.I.P. experience and will pay extra for themselves and a group of friends to receive exclusive attention. Bottle Service is an offering in which a customer makes reservations and pays for a table or dedicated services of a waitress or waiter. Customers benefit by not being required to pay a cover charge and they receive special treatment that is not available to the average patron. Club and bar owners benefit because, as part of the package, they require the customer or group to buy a bottle or bottles (if they set a required minimum) of an alcoholic beverage. The club owner can increase the price of the bottle(s) significantly, and of course add to the profit they will make.
There is a concern among some in the community that businesses offering Bottle Service increase the likelihood of patrons overindulging and getting drunk. There have been lawsuits in a number of states where clubs are being targeted because of the number of calls requiring police response. While there may be some legitimacy in the concerns of state liquor commissions, local governments and police officials, businesses can ease those concerns with the use of bottle locks. If made a part of a pre-arranged agreement, the club can attach a bottle lock to the bottle(s) they bring to the table and allow the dedicated server to control the drinks. The customers can enjoy their party and leave their table to mingle and dance while the bottle remains at the table with the security of the lock.
An additional benefit is the ability of a Bottle Service to control the age of those being served. Think about the atmosphere in a large bar or a nightclub. People crowd in at the bar and the bartenders have to serve continuous rounds of drinks. Keeping track of who is actually receiving those drinks can be extremely difficult. It can potentially cause issues of a drink being given to an underage patron. There is the potential risk to the business of incurring fines or even being closed for serving underage minors. Servers with a key to bottle locks can monitor those being issued drinks from the bottles and can avoid the chance of serving an underage party member. It also serves the interest of the establishment to use Bottle Service because it is easier for a server to make a determination if a patron is becoming too intoxicated and make a decision not to open the locked bottle. In the crowded atmosphere of a bar or nightclub, customers who have had too much to drink may not stand out quickly enough for managers to step in and take control of a situation. Customers may become a nuisance to other patrons or they could become violent and start an altercation, escalating a situation that could have been controlled earlier had someone taken notice. These patrons can be potential liabilities to a club. With tact and politeness a server for a group can partner with management and isolate a situation among their group and prevent someone from becoming a problem to other customers or to the business itself.
If staff are properly trained and tools such as bottle locks are built into the structure of a Bottle Service business, customers can enjoy a level of service that once was out of their reach. Businesses benefit by the added income and can exercise more control over the activity of a party. It becomes a win-win situation for everyone.

Stolen Liquor Is Big Business
If you are the manager or owner of a package store or a grocer that sells wine and liquor, it may be time to start looking into investing in bottle security. The “business” of trafficking stolen liquor and other spirits is growing exponentially and the problem is not going away any time soon. There are cases blown open every day and even more under investigation as we speak. Organized theft rings are casing new locations all the time and unfortunately if you don’t employ some type of liquor bottle security, you are likely going to be a future victim. Will they break in overnight and wipe out all your shelves, or will they come in when you’re open and sneak out your front door with your staff standing there completely unaware? The good thing is if they come in your store and see that you have your valuable inventory protected with Bottle Locks they will be more likely to turn around and leave. Attempting to remove Bottle Locks is futile. It’s more trouble than it’s worth, and the bottle itself will probably shatter before the lock will break!
If you still aren’t convinced you need bottle security, let me tell you about a case I read about tonight. A city police department was getting call after call on a consistent basis about stolen liquor. Package stores, warehouse stores, and grocers were all getting hit, and it was always top shelf brands. The detectives start looking into the crimes and discover an organized ring of thieves. The department gathered a lot intelligence and started building their case. But the key was to find the one that gave the orders. That’s when they set up a sting with one of the thieves turning into an informant. They got with loss prevention from some of the area stores and got cases of high retail liquor they could use for bait. When they informant got the call he took the bottles provided by the detectives and met the buyer. Well, it turned out to be the local florist, and he was paying the thief pennies on the dollar for each bottle. He would mingle around at weddings he was providing flowers for and get chummy with the next couple getting married. He would then let them know he could give them a great deal on an open bar. Then he called his thieves and gave them their “shopping lists”. Any time there was an impending wedding, a crime spree would start. Now that florist is sitting in jail wishing he had just stuck to selling corsages and bouquets.
There are rogue club owners out there that balk at buying from the legal alcohol wholesaler. There are managers of small restaurants that want to sell liquor by the drink, but don’t want to bother with the hassle of getting an alcohol license. There are people out there that are willing to steal for any of these guys. It’s all pure profit because they have nothing invested in it in the first place. One of the best things you can do to keep your business from being victimized by one of these theft rings is to add some form of bottle security measures. One thing you can count on: if a theft ring arrives to clean off your shelves, they will be deterred by the presence of Bottle Locks. They send a clear message that your business is serious about keeping your valuable inventory safe.
