Why Allow Wallets To Walk Away? Tighten Up Security On Accessories With Alpha Cable Locks
Work in Retail Loss Prevention long enough and you end up with those situations that make you just shake your head and ask yourself, “Did that really just happen?” I had a moment like that when I started off as a department store Loss Prevention Officer. I was in our security office watching our sales floor via a closed circuit television system. One of our top theft departments was handbags and wallets. In order to prevent shoplifting of the highest priced purses, we kept them in lock-up showcases. Everything else was open-sell and protected with electronic article surveillance (EAS) tags, employee customer service and cameras. We did not have the retail anti-theft devices available to us that are on the market today that are available through Alpha Security, such as the Alpha cable lock.
Before I continue my story, everyone knows what a lock-up display case is, however not everyone is as familiar with the Alpha cable lock. The cable lock is made up of a tough, thin, steel cable, connected to an EAS sensitive, housing. The casing or shell has a flashing LED light that makes a visual deterrent to prevent shoplifting by drawing the thief’s attention to the retail anti-theft device. Locks are also tamper proof and will sound a high pitched alarm if someone attempts to cut the cable. Since they are EAS sensitive, if a piece of merchandise with a lock on it is carried too close to EAS antennas the antenna alarm will activate and warn employees of a possible theft attempt. Once alerted, employees can respond to the alarm activation and determine the cause of the alarm or the alarm may cause a crook to drop merchandise and run. I have seen numerous recoveries of merchandise over the years due to EAS alarm activations and proper employee response or merchandise abandoned by would-be shoplifters.
Continuing with my, “Did that really just happen?” story, I was in the camera room monitoring the CCTV system and received a call from a store associate alerting me to a male subject in the handbag department. I asked the associate to give customer service and I would watch on camera. The subject was picking up purses, and wallets, looking at them and then putting them back. I confess I was starting to think this was just a guy gift shopping for someone and I became somewhat less concerned of a possible theft attempt. The sales associate approached the man and offered to assist him. The next thing I knew, the “customer” picked up a very expensive wallet, grinned at the sales associate and ran out of the store. I had never seen a shoplifter take a moment to grin before running off and I had to recover from my momentary shock. I did run after the man and eventually caught him and got the wallet back (disclaimer: don’t do this at home, we did not have restrictions on us way back then preventing the pursuit of shoplifters). A little happily ever after moment, that sales associate was my wife and even today, nearly 25 years later, she reminds me that she never trusted the man and I should have taken her call more seriously. SIGH!
I firmly believe that if we had Alpha Security retail anti-theft devices such as the cable lock available and attached to the wallets, the visibility of the lock would have deterred the shoplifter from stealing.
Not every store can afford to staff a Loss Prevention officer due to the expense of the additional payroll. What a store CAN do is invest in retail anti-theft devices such as an Alpha cable lock and benefit financially from reduced theft and improved profits. Find out how Alpha Security can help your store prevent shoplifting.

Designer Eyewear Frame And Sunglass Theft Making You See Red? The Eyewear Tag Is the Cure To Your Problem
I admit it, I am a cheapskate. When it comes to sunglasses or just about anything else, if it’s cheap enough I’ll probably buy it (and occasionally regret the decision later for not spending more). The sunglasses I have in each of our cars, $1 a pair. My “good” shoes, $19.99 a pair on sales, blue jeans, $10.00 a pair. I just don’t see a need to spend a lot of money for some things. However, there are people who are very insistent on quality when shopping, especially when it comes to eyewear. Many brands of eyeglass frames and sunglasses are very high priced. For example one popular sun glass company has glasses as high as $285.00 for a pair of “Aviator Titanium” on their web site. Another eyewear company has a pair of designer eyeglass frames for $310.00 on their website. When these glasses and frames are available in stores, the risk for theft is high. To prevent shoplifting of eyewear, retailers and optometrist offices should be securing their merchandise with the Alpha Eyewear Tag.
The Alpha Eyewear Tag is a retail anti-theft device designed to fit on the arm of a pair of glasses or sunglasses. The device is small enough to allow a customer to try on a pair of glasses but large enough to make it obvious that the merchandise belongs to the store. There is no room for a potential thief to try to say that the glasses were worn into the store. This tag also comes with radio frequency or acoustic magnetic protection based on what a store orders. Regardless of the system a store has, the electronic article surveillance (EAS) antennas will detect the tags on the glasses (assuming the correct type of tag was ordered). Anyone attempting to walk out the door with a pair of glasses would set off the alarm at the doors.
Is theft of glasses a real concern for a retailer? According to the 2014-2015 Global Retail Theft Barometer survey, sunglasses were the number four shortage category within the Apparel and Fashion Accessories category. When I worked in retail loss prevention, both in a department store and in a big box retail store we experienced a significant amount of theft in the sunglasses department. During the summer months especially it was easy to catch shoplifters simply by focusing attention on this area of the store. A “customer” would pick up a pair of sunglasses, try them on and if they liked them, they would pop the tag off and drop them in a purse or wear them out of the store. The EAS tag hanging from the glasses could not prevent shoplifting since the tag was easy to remove. The Alpha Eyewear Tag makes it much more difficult to remove since it is a hard tag and as I mentioned before, damage would probably result before the tag would come off.
If you still have doubts about whether you should use an Eyewear Tag on your merchandise, consider these stories. From Heraldcourier.com, Nov. 8, 2015, a man and woman were wanted in Burlington, North Carolina, according to police for going into a particular store twice and stealing 55 pairs of eyeglasses valued at $9,735. In a Jan. 19, 2016 report on Fox2now.com, it was reported that three men and a woman stole $900 worth of sunglasses and a few hours later they hit an eye care store and stole 12 pair of Ray Ban sunglasses totaling more than $2,700. The detectives handling the case said that, “It is very likely the expensive frames are sold for top dollar on the black market”. I believe the use of retail anti-theft devices used on these glasses would have prevented the theft at these locations.
The Eyewear Tag by Alpha Security can help prevent shoplifting of your sunglasses and designer eyewear frames. Your profits will climb as your shortage goes down when you use these retail anti-theft devices.

Stop Theft In The Medical Field
Did you know there is an actual book called “How to Steal from a Medical Practice”? It’s true, and this guy knows all about it because he had a terrible experience with his office’s billing manager. She stole $20,000 from his practice in a year and a half. Her punishment: restitution only because it was her first offense. Then she got a billing manager job at another office in a neighboring town within a week of the hearing. Theft from medical offices has been a problem for decades and it is really growing out of hand. It’s not just internal theft of money either. The staff takes prescription drugs that are meant for patient samples. The patients themselves steal supplies from the exam rooms. In the age of technology, there is the threat of patients and staff alike stealing the devices that now hold medical records. Tablet and i-pad theft is a whole new issue for medical practices, and unless they have been equipped with some form of anti-theft device, they are near impossible to recover.
Many offices are converting their old records keeping systems over to newer, faster, and smaller hand held devices instead of having to be tied down to an old bulky desk top system. They can hold the devices and take notes on them, while still being able to make eye contact with the patient and make the experience much more personal. The devices take up much less space, and they are very user friendly. In fact, many offices have even made the switch from handing their patients a clipboard of papers to fill out their information and registration, to handing them an i-pad or tablet and allowing them to just type in what is needed and make updates and changes to their personal information. (I just went to the doctor a couple weeks ago, and wrote down the same stuff on three different forms so that would be awesome!)
Unfortunately, there could be major problems if the office discovers that there has been an I-pad or tablet theft. It really depends on the intentions of the thief, of course. They could be just stealing it to try and sell at a pawn shop. Or the tablet theft could have been for the purpose of attempting to hack the device for medical records or financial information. It’s one thing to have to just buy a new I-pad, but to have to deal with all the repercussions of identity theft is a whole huge issue.
Medical practices need product protection tools just like retailers. A nice combination that will protect those valuable electronic devices against theft are the Checkpoint N10 System and the Alpha Thunder Tag. Together, these two are unstoppable. The Checkpoint N10 is very similar to the systems that many stores use to prevent shoplifting. But, while it has the same theft detection power, this one is smaller, sleeker, and designed for the professional setting of the medical office. The Alpha Thunder Tag is the partner that protects your practice from i-pad theft. It adheres directly to the tablet, and it is the catalyst that will activate the alarm on the Checkpoint N10 if there is a theft attempt. If a patient or a staff member attempts to leave the premises with one of your devices, you will be immediately alerted. You don’t have to wait and hope it never happens to your office; take a look at the Checkpoint N10 System and the Alpha Thunder Tag.

I have mentioned in previous articles that my retail background has primarily been in the Loss Prevention field, but over the past five years I have remained in retail working for an office supply store as a customer service specialist. Sometimes my work requires me to stock merchandise on the sales floor and in doing so I use retail anti-theft devices to protect specific items or price points of merchandise. Recently I was putting out merchandise and using Alpha Keepers to protect electronics, specifically jump drives, memory cards and memory sticks. I point this out because I want to let retailers who are struggling to prevent shoplifting in their stores understand there are methods to protect even the smallest items they may carry.
Alpha Keepers are sturdy, clear, hard boxes with a hinged bottom. They can only be opened by using a special detachment key, making them very difficult for a shoplifter to force open. The boxes allow merchandise to be displayed in the open and customers can see the package and read labels while the risk for theft is dramatically reduced. Boxes are able to be displayed on store shelves and even have an option for inserting a plastic tab that allows the box to be displayed on a peg hook. They can be ordered to work with acoustic magnetic (am) electronic article surveillance (EAS) systems or radio frequency (rf) systems. The boxes are made in a number of sizes so they are versatile enough to prevent shoplifting of a wide range of products.
Some items are prone to theft due to their size and how easy they are to conceal. Because of this many retailers will lock these items in display cases to prevent shoplifting. Showcases and locking display cases, even locking peg hooks require a sales associate with a key to be readily available to open the case; show a product and either ring up the item or take it to a register. If there are other customers wanting to look at merchandise they have to wait until the associate returns or another staff member becomes available. I have seen the negative impact locking display cases have on sales. People get irritated and leave if they have to wait for service. This of course means lost sales and there is no room for that in retail. The alternative used to be taking the chance and putting out merchandise and hoping customer service and the honesty of customers would prevent shoplifting.
Alpha Keepers offer merchants an alternate solution to both situations. For instance, in my store, by securing the jump drives and memory sticks in these retail anti-theft devices, as I was doing, we are locking up merchandise. The benefit is that the customer can make the selection they want without waiting for assistance. They can walk around the store and continue to shop and when they are ready for checkout, the cashier has the detachment key to take the merchandise out of the boxes.
The benefit for the store is that customers don’t get frustrated and leave because they have to wait for assistance for something they may not feel should have to be locked up. The boxes also protect electronics by being a visible deterrent to a thief. Most shoplifters will not want to risk an EAS alarm or try to find a way to force open a box. Additionally, the boxes do add bulk to a small item and make it more difficult to conceal something. A purse can conceal a large number of jump drives removed from a peg hook. The same purse may only hold one or two jump drives protected in Alpha Keepers.
Protect electronics in your store and prevent shoplifting by using Alpha Keepers. Nothing is too small and you will improve customer service and sales.

Alpha 3 Alarm- 5
Prevent Shoplifting- 3
Alpha 3 Alarm Cables Won’t Damage Product, Will Repair Profits
If you are a retailer of a small, medium or even large sized company and you are looking for merchandise protection to prevent shoplifting, chances are, you are or have been victim of major theft. According to the National Retail Federation, more than 50% of retailers surveyed state that they have been victim to Organized Retail Crime, or ORC. I’ve been around in Loss Prevention long enough to know that with certain seasons, comes certain merchandise that is targeted by shoplifters. The key to preventing such major thefts lies in your merchandise protection and that device’s ability to prevent shoplifting. During the winter months and Holiday Season, criminals like to target expensive coats, jackets and other cold weather clothing. With the merchandise being high value, merchants are tasked with finding a protection solution that will not damage items, while keeping their merchandising standards at the highest level. Enter Alpha 3 Alarm cables.
The Alpha 3 Alarm cable is a merchandise protection device that is fitted on clothing such as jackets, hooded sweatshirts and coats through a cable. Attached to this cable is an audible alarm that not only activates EAS towers to alarm, but will also alarm if the device is cut or otherwise removed without the Alpha Key by a store associate. The sound of the alarm is enough to make even the toughest shoplifter cringe, dropping the merchandise and making a mad dash out the door empty handed. The cable can be affixed to merchandise in a manner where honest customers are still able to try on the clothing. This is important because lost sales have been attributed to customers not being able to try on merchandise, or because they feel as if they are being treated as a thief with other devices that are used to prevent shoplifting.
In addition to affixing the cables, retailers can get very creative in the applications of the Alpha 3 Alarm cables. I have seen merchants use the cables to secure expensive handbags, wallets and various other merchandise to fixtures. With varying length, the cables still make it possible for customers to shop the items, but prevent the thieves from running off with all your stock. The cables are designed to be able to be put on merchandise at the time of back-room processing, and it takes minimal time to complete. The minimal time a store may put into payroll will be paid back ten-fold by the amount of money the company saves in preventing losses on merchandise that would otherwise be unprotected. In more than twelve years of Retail Loss Prevention, I have never seen a shoplifter be able to remove an Alpha 3 Alarm cable without causing the alarm to sound. The product is extremely durable, and no matter the method whether it be cutting the cable, smashing the alarm itself or pulling it apart- the alarm always sounds. Since this device has been around for a fairly long period of time, habitual shoplifters who have been defeated by them before know to stay away from them.
In one particular company that I worked for, I was working Loss Prevention and the store had no camera system to operate off of. I was walking the floor when all of a sudden I heard the screech of the alarm cable. In a matter of seconds I was able to pin-point where the alarm was coming from, only to find the shocked shoplifter attempting to stash the alarm in the shelving and walk away. The shoplifter still attempted to exit the store with unpaid merchandise in hand, as he did not spot me watching him stash the cable. A successful apprehension of the shoplifter resulted, but I do not have myself or my skills to thank. I truly relied on the other “eyes” in the building- the Alpha 3 Alarm Cable.
