Display Case Dilemma; A Loss Prevention Manager’s Discourse On Why He Prefers Gaming Keepers To Prevent Shoplifting Part 2
In part 2 of my article on the pros of using gaming keepers versus display cases in order to prevent shoplifting, I want to visit some of less obvious issues that can and do arise when showcases are the primary means to deter theft.  I am suggesting there are much better retail anti-theft devices called Alpha Keepers that can stop merchandise shrinkage AND improve other aspects of your business.  I am also going to provide some suggestions for improving the customer’s shopping experience in your store which can drive up sales.  The basis for these articles came from a recent shopping trip I made to a big box store and two big faux Pas I would like to see other stores avoid. The trip was made so that my son could purchase a video game for a game system he owns. The game he wanted was in a display case and required us to wait for help, until the game was removed from the showcase, handed to my son and the employee walked off.  When my son said, “Thank You” the reply was “No problem”.
Display cases do prevent shoplifting but they can also impede sales. Customers have to wait or seek help in an effort just to LOOK at something in a case. People rarely look at something in a showcase without browsing other items before making a buying decision. Alpha Keepers, and specifically in this case, gaming keepers are designed of clear polycarbonate material that makes it easy for a shopper to see all of the packaging information. It’s sort of like having a mini display case in the palms of your hands. All Alpha Keepers lock so shoplifters can’t get to the product but honest customers can pick up the item, continue shopping and take it to the checkout line at their convenience. Alpha Keepers are also created so they will cause electronic article surveillance (EAS) antennas to sound if protected merchandise is carried too close to the antennas. The deterrence value of the gaming keepers and the potential of the EAS alarm serve to shift criminal activity to other stores and away from yours.
So how are you going to improve the shopping experience for your customers by going away from display cases in favor of Alpha retail anti-theft devices? I mentioned that the keepers are like a mini display case.  What if I did not have to wait at that showcase for a sales person to open it? My son could have picked up the game he wanted and we could have continued shopping. While the delay was somewhat aggravating, having a long retail background helps me be a little more patient with such things. As a Manager On Duty, I had the fun experience of dealing with customers who do not have that same patience and will let you know it. There is also the potential for missed sales when a customer does not want to wait any longer for help and walks away. How much money have your display cases cost you?
How about showcase key security? As a Loss Prevention Manager I had to be concerned every time display keys were lost or missing. Sometimes it was a salesperson leaving with them for the day. Sometimes the keys were put down while in the process of helping a customer and then there were the times I would find keys still in the lock of the case.  If keys are lost, security is compromised and locks have to be re-cored, a headache and a needless expense (take it from someone who has had to do it). Gaming keepers require only a detachment key, secured at the cash register. No need to carry them around and risk loss.
Another issue with display cases is the training of personnel on how to handle lock up merchandise. As in my situation, the employee simply removed the game from the case and handed it to my son. If it is locked up, it should only make sense it was not to be handed to the customer. Training and follow-up still does not ensure procedures are going to be followed.
Finally, a word on customer service. I would like to encourage store owners and managers, train your staff not to say, “No problem” to a customer. It may seem small but your customers were not a problem to begin with. Set expectations that you want from them. Be sure to treat customers with respect.
You can prevent shoplifting and improve the customer experience by using gaming keepers for your high value merchandise.  Consider all the advantages you could have over your competition with new retail anti-theft devices.

Display Case Dilemma; A Loss Prevention Manager’s Discourse On Why He Prefers Gaming Keepers To Prevent Shoplifting Part 1
I was in a big box retail store just the other day with one of my sons who happens to be in his twenties. I mention this because it wasn’t like a young boy who wanted to find a game then hand something from a case to his dad. My son was looking at video games through the showcase glass at the game he wanted. Let me rant for a moment…I HATE showcases. Thanks, I had to get that off my chest. I will delve into that a little later in the article. Fortunately my son already knew which game he wanted so there was no need to browse through a locked display case to read information on other games he might want to consider for purchase. We stood at the case for a minute and when no one came over to assist, I mentioned to him that I had observed an employee an aisle over from us. As my son went to ask for assistance the young man walked by without looking in our direction. My son asked him for help and the associate walked over, opened the showcase, handed my son the game, locked up the showcase and when my son thanked him he said, “No Problem” and walked away. Having many years of Retail Loss Prevention experience under my belt I will be the first to acknowledge I may be a bit more critical of security procedures than most people. I do feel safe in saying I don’t think this was how the security procedures for this item was supposed to be handled. If a business is using showcases to prevent shoplifting then why are employees removing items from lock-up and handing them to a customer and walking away? Better retail anti-theft devices would be Alpha’s gaming keepers in this situation.
What are gaming keepers and why are they my preferred retail anti-theft devices when you want to prevent shoplifting of games? Gaming Keepers are clear, locking cases made of recyclable polycarbonate designed for individual videogame software units. They come in designs to fit smaller games for handheld units such as Gameboys or larger cases for console games such as the PS4 or Xbox One, just to name a few. Alpha keepers allow merchandise to be stocked in the open for easy accessibility by customers while at the same time they prevent shoplifting. The keepers are alarmed so if a shoplifter tries to force one open a high pitched alarm sounds and alerts employees to the attempted theft. Because they are see-through, game content and warning labels can be read. Since they are open display, customers have no need to wait for assistance to pick up a game and take it to check-out! Additionally, gaming keepers and for that matter, all Alpha Keepers are built with electronic article surveillance (EAS) capability so they cause an EAS antenna to alarm if carried into the range of the antenna.
I’ve addressed what Alpha Keepers are for games and I’ve discussed how they prevent shoplifting, but I only alluded to why they are my preferred retail anti-theft devices for video games. Showcases should be a last resort for any type of displayed merchandise. I have several reasons for saying this. First, the customer is resigned to wait if they simply want to look at a displayed item. That doesn’t even mean they will buy it. As someone who has been a Manager On Duty, this is a horrible way to spend payroll dollars. You have to have someone ready to respond immediately with showcase keys. And no, no guarantee you are selling anything to that customer. Second, if more customers need assistance, your employee is forced to stay with the patron at the showcase, are you staffing extra people to ensure you can help at showcases AND not lose customers who are waiting in other areas for help?
In part two of this series I will discuss other concerns and I have with showcases and I will also discuss important customer service issues for retailers. In the meantime, consider the advantages I have mentioned if you were to include Alpha Keepers in you strategy to prevent shoplifting of videogames.  You can profit from reduced theft and reduced payroll.

Alpha Keepers Will Solve All Of Your Inventory Control Problems

Alpha Keepers Will Solve All Of Your Inventory Control Problems
Do you have inventory control problems?  Are you routinely trying to locate product that should be on the shelves, but is nowhere to be found?  I think anyone who is in the business of sales, regardless of the market, has at one time or another had inventory issues.  I went through these same issues myself in my store.  We typically do a full inventory quarterly, which involves the majority of my staff, going through every item.  This includes our storage items and those on the shelf.  It is such a time consuming process and nobody enjoys it.  I end up paying overtime and buying pizza just to bribe my employees into being upbeat about the process.  I spend days trying to track down items, verify sales, and account for product before I accept the fact that I have a serious shrinkage issue.  Over the period of a year, I noticed a huge loss rate in our electronics/entertainment section to include:  Video games, music CDs, Movies, and various other electronics and accessories.  I knew we had a serious problem, but I wasn’t sure how to prevent shoplifting and reduce my losses.  I ranted to a friend of mine who is also in the retail industry, and he suggested I use Alpha keepers, to secure my higher valued items in my areas of concern.  So I did some research and decided to take his advice and try them out.
I learned very quickly that Alpha keepers come in a wide variety of options, which allow me to utilize them in more areas than I ever thought possible.  They have collapsible keepers, which provide maximized shelf space, media keepers, and a multi-use keeper that can accommodate various types of products.  These products are made of a durable plastic, and encase the item completely, preventing the removal of the item from the packaging.  The keepers are bulky and make concealment difficult, without limiting the customers’ visibility and handling of the product.  The Alpha keepers are re-useable, which makes them a sound investment.  Associates simply remove the keeper from the product, at the time of sale, and use them again on other products.  The media keepers come with an alarm and LED light that provide a visual and audible deterrent in the event of tampering.  Some keepers come equipped with hang tags, for those small items you want to display.  These items provide a viable means to prevent shoplifting in your store, improve inventory control, and increase profit.
The Alpha keepers have significantly improved my inventory control and my ability to monitor and manage my shrinkage rates.  I have reduced my loss by 20% on the items protected by the keepers, which reduces my headache during inventory and increases my profits.  I strongly believe that the added protection has increased our theft deterrence storewide. If you want to stop shoplifting, I suggest you look at your options and better protect yourself against theft.  I know it has improved my business and the moral of both myself and my employees.

How Alpha Keepers Could Have Prevented Compact Disc Chaos And A Shoplifter’s Tell-Tale Trail Of Evidence

How Alpha Keepers Could Have Prevented Compact Disc Chaos And A Shoplifter’s Tell-Tale Trail Of Evidence
I have had odd experiences during my years as a Loss Prevention Manager, but one that sticks out clearly in my mind was a shoplifter who decided to steal a couple of compact discs from the store.  At that time we used retail anti-theft devices to prevent shoplifting, but these were only plastic sleeves that surrounded the outside of the CD.  The protection was not all that great but it was the best we had at the time.  In this particular case, the better option would have been to use Alpha Keepers to protect CDs if we had them, unfortunately we did not and I will detail the reason why it would have been desirable shortly.
What are Alpha Keepers and how can they protect CDs? A Keeper is basically a heavy duty, clear box with a locking lid.  The box has built in electronic article surveillance (EAS) protection that emits a radio frequency signal that activates an EAS antenna alarm if bought into the detection field of the antenna.  When that happens the antenna activates audible and visual alarms, usually flashing LED lights and a piercing, noisy alert that lets employees respond to the activation.  Alpha Keepers also have a built in tamper alarm that sounds when someone attempts to open the box without the proper detachment key.  The great thing about these Keepers is they are see-through so a customer can see the information on the CD they are interested in without having to request an associate to take it out of a showcase.  They prevent shoplifting because the criminal can’t get to the merchandise without activating an alarm at some point.  As far as retail anti-theft devices go, they are superb because they allow a merchant to display merchandise that customers can pick up, look at, carry and purchase when they are ready.  There is no additional help needed for unlocking displays or lock up cases, all removal of merchandise takes place at the point of sale.
Not having access to these cases led to my adventure with the shoplifter I was telling you about.  The shoplifter had been working on stealing for a few minutes before I got on his trail.  I was walking through the store and noticed some drops of blood on the tile floor.  I started following the trail and came to the household section where we sold kitchen knives.  I tracked the blood further and went through a number of departments looking for the source. When I got to our bath section, I found that there was an increased amount of blood and then I noticed some of our towels were bloody and part of a cut plastic CD sleeve.  It didn’t take long to hear my would-be criminal muttering a few aisles away. I located the thief and began observing him from an endcap.  Sure enough, he pulled out something that appeared to be a kitchen knife and continued to try cutting away at that retail anti-theft device to get to the merchandise.  I had to give him credit, he wouldn’t give up.  My concern turned to my safety as well as the suspect’s safety (and the fact he was bleeding all over our store and towels).   I wasn’t eager to stop someone with a knife, on the other hand the more I watched the suspect the more I could tell he was intoxicated and could potentially hurt himself seriously.  Fortunately the suspect got the one CD out of the anti-theft device and concealed it and put the knife on the shelf with the other CD and then walked to the front of the store where I was able to apprehend him.
I tell this story because I know how well Alpha Keepers work and how they can protect CD’s and prevent shoplifting.  I have seen alternative retail anti-theft devices that were not as effective and I am convinced that any retailer that invests in Keepers will decrease the theft in this department dramatically and significantly improve profits.  When merchandise isn’t stolen, it is available for the honest customers to buy.  Check out Alpha Keepers and see how they can help your store immediately.

5 REASONS YOU SHOULD NEVER PROTECT RAZOR BLADES

5 REASONS YOU SHOULD NEVER PROTECT RAZOR BLADES
Reason #5 – A Booster has to Make a Living
Would you really be able to call yourself an American if you were the reason a fellow citizen couldn’t make a decent living? I know I couldn’t. Using Alpha Keepers to protect razor blades could be the reason some poor soul goes without food or drugs tonight. Can you live with that weighing on your mind? That shoplifter has to get up every day and drive all the way to your store just to steal. Now, he could go to dozens of other shops, but he picks you. Help him out a little and think twice before you try to keep your profits to yourself.
Reason #4 – Corner Stores, Flea Markets and Other Fences Rely on you
You know, that booster isn’t the only one relying on an easy pay day from your store. That booster has to sell those stolen razors somewhere to someone. There’s a whole supply chain that could maybe go hungry if you did something crazy, like start using Alpha Keepers to keep your blades safe.
Reason #3 – Profit Margins on razors are YUGE! You can Afford some Losses
Of all the items in the store, boosters target razor blades. Good for you since the margins are so incredibly high. All those razor blade manufacturers spur so much competition in the market that your costs are next to nothing. You just mark up the prices because you’re a greedy company. It doesn’t matter if someone steals a few dozen a day; those losses will hardly have any impact on your overall profitability. Heck, using Alpha Keepers to protect razor blades is like using a flashlight during the day!
Reason #2 – Losses Look Good on Your Taxes
Any good businessperson will tell you that you have to show a loss at the end of the year. It’s the only way to stay in business. What better way to show losses than to be as inviting to criminals as possible? The thieves will stay away if you start to protect razor blades with security measures, so make sure you leave them out and un-secured so you can show the biggest loss imaginable.
Reason #1 – Razors are Expensive, that Means Shoplifters Can’t Afford Them
Shoplifters have to shave too, you know? Clearly if they are shoplifting, then they don’t have much money to begin with. You could cut them some slack and not use those Alpha Keepers to protect razor blades. For all you know, they may have a big interview coming up with a big fence and they have to look sharp to land the job. You wouldn’t want to get in the way of that, now would you?

Reason #3 – Profit Margins on razors are YUGE! You can Afford some Losses Of all the items in the store, boosters target razor blades.

Reason #2 – Losses Look Good on Your Taxes Any good businessperson will tell you that you have to show a loss at the end of the year. It’s the only way to stay in business. What better way to show losses than to be as inviting to criminals as possible? The thieves will stay away if you start to protect razor blades with security measures, so make sure you leave them out and un-secured so you can show the biggest loss imaginable.

Reason #1 – Razors are Expensive, that Means Shoplifters Can’t Afford Them Shoplifters have to shave too, you know? Clearly if they are shoplifting, then they don’t have much money to begin with. You could cut them some slack and not use those Alpha Keepers to protect razor blades. For all you know, they may have a big interview coming up with a big fence and they have to look sharp to land the job. You wouldn’t want to get in the way of that, now would you?
