Give Shoplifters Arachnophobia, Not Employees – Understanding the Alpha Spider Wrap

There’s no reason to be afraid, these spiders are friendly.  If anyone should have arachnophobia, it should be the shoplifters, not your employees.  I have been in the retail and loss prevention industry for many years, and one of my favorite tools for merchandise protection has to be the Alpha Spider Wrap.  I have encountered employees that have been intimidated by the spider wrap because they didn’t understand how it worked.  Some were just putting it on the items because they were told to, and didn’t have any understanding why they were doing it, and how it functioned.
If you don’t know how these gadgets function, here is a brief explanation: They work in conjunction with a special magnetic key that you use to open or adjust the device.  You place the wires around the merchandise and click it closed.  Next, you just crank the top until it has a snug fit to the merchandise.  If a shoplifter tries to cut the wires to get to the merchandise, a loud alarm sounds.  The last thing the shoplifters want is that kind of attention.  I have actually personally observed shoplifters drop the items and run out of the store when this alarm goes off.  I don’t think most of them expect that to happen, and it’s quite entertaining.
The best way to get to know the product is to first read the instructions, and then kind of play around with it and get to know how it works.  You want to make sure that everyone on your team knows how to use the product, so that they don’t slow down the customer’s shopping experience while they are trying to remove it at the register.  If you have employees that are intimidated by retail anti-theft devices, try to make it fun.  You could show them all how to use the devices, and then have a contest to see who can put the Spider Wrap on an item and take it off the fastest.  This will create healthy competition, and get the employees excited about using the devices.
With the Alpha Spider Wrap, you want to find a balance of keeping the spider wrap tight to the merchandise, but not damaging the package.  I have worked with some people in the past that tighten the wrap too tight, and it crushed part of the package, making it unappealing for customers to purchase.  On the other hand, you want to make sure that it is tight.  People should not be able to remove the spider wrap just by pulling one of the wires over a corner of the package.
There are many retail anti-theft devices on the market today, and it is easy to get overwhelmed.  They aren’t as scary as they seem if you understand how to use them.  Alpha Security has made it easy with this one, and once you know how to use the device, it is a very quick process to place it on merchandise and remove it.  One thing for sure is that if a thief messes with this spider, they will be in for a loud surprise, as its bark is worse than its bite.

Checkpoint Labels and Cigarettes

Walk into any grocery store, corner gas station, big box retailer or pharmacy and you’ll see one thing in common. A checkpoint security system and cigarettes behind the counter. As retailers, we always say that you can’t sell something if it’s locked behind glass. So why is this true of cigarettes? What do you think would happen if all retailers put cigarettes on the floor where they were easily accessible to the customers? I think a lot of stores would quickly go bankrupt… personally.
It’s not as if you can simply stick a checkpoint label on the box and expect them not to be stolen. Obviously, there are states laws that regulate the sale of this product, and I’m sure that has something to do with how they’re displayed to the customer, but I’m sure theft also plays a part in that as well. One thing I noticed (my dad’s a smoker) is that that store where he purchases from uses a checkpoint label on the box, even though their access is strictly controlled. Interesting idea, so I reached out to a few of my peers to gain a little insight, since my company does not dabble in tobacco products.
Even with a checkpoint system in place, you can still be a victim to loss when it comes to tobacco products. You can have an employee steal thousands, or you can be the victim of a burglary. Interestingly enough, “dollar stores” that carry tobacco product experience burglaries on a daily, well nightly, basis. There’s almost nothing you can do to stop a burglary, but leveraging your checkpoint system to help track those thieves is a sure way to go.
There have been quite a few cases in my state where investigators have been able to track stolen goods, cigarettes including, because the retailer used a customized checkpoint label that included their store and store number. Not only can this tell law enforcement what company a stolen item came from, but it can actually narrow it down to a specific store. This is what the police need in order to prosecute this individuals, and something as simple as a checkpoint label is helping police do just that.

Clothing Security Tags for Theft Deterrence

Small businesses cannot afford to lose their inventory to theft.  Whether it is a perceived need or want, or stealing on a whim because the person sees the opportunity, there are many tools available to deter shoplifters of all kinds of different retailers.  Stores that specialize in clothing can be just as susceptible to theft as an electronics store.  Clothing can be worn out the door, concealed underneath what they came in wearing.  Accessories can be put on and worn out as well, or stuffed into another shopping bag or purse.
When it comes to this type of theft, deterrence is one of your best defenses.  Clothing Security tags come in different forms, colors and sizes.  There are the flat Checkpoint tags that can be adhesed to backs of price tags or even sewn deep into a hidden seam or pocket.  These work great because they give the would be thief another thing to worry about if they try to get out the door without finding the tag.
Additionally, there are the hard tags.  These are my preference because they send a clear message that the store is serious about Anti-Shoplifting.  They can be used in conjuntion with the flat tags, if you choose, for even more protection.   They come in many shapes, sizes, and colors.  Hard Clothing Security tags can be attached with pins or lanyards, and can only be removed with the correct tools.  They are meant to be visible to the customer, but are not something they can simply tear off and discard.  The hard tag is a great theft deterrent because the customer knows they may damage the merchandise if they try to remove it.  These tags activate the Checkpoint system the same as the flat tags, so if a person tries to wear something out the door, the staff will be alerted.
Hard Clothing Security tags do not impede customers from looking at the items on display, or from taking them off of racks to try them on.  They can be attached to zippers, in a seam, or many other locations and do not harm the product when attached or removed.  Hard tags can be utilized on small items like watches and bracelets as well as large coats and handbags.  They are easily removed and completely reusable, and do not require a lot of training.  Unused tags can also be stored under counters, or anywhere the store prefers, as they do not take up a lot of space.  These durable tags are worth taking a look at if your business is seeing shrink in clothing and accessories.  Along with excellent customer service, Clothing Security tags are a theft deterrent that works.

Shark Tags Help Stop Unwarranted Returns

It is almost spring, so prom and wedding season is upon us. Unfortunately that also means the dreaded “habitual wardrober” will be coming out of hibernation as well.   These people come and buy the latest and greatest from you, wear it for the big day, and next thing you know, they are back to return it.  Typically, the excuse is that they could not live with themselves for spending that kind of money on a one day outfit, or they claim there is a defect in the garment, perhaps causing discomfort when they tried wearing or using  it.  The best defense against these unscrupulous people is a simple solution: The Shark Tag.
Attach a Shark Tag to the item, in a very visible place.   These are small devices that perform a huge task for your business.  They enforce your store’s return policy at the store and even from the customer’s home and closet.  You can even choose to utilize the super strong pin’s teeth to attach a copy of the store’s return policy to the garments and accessories so there are no questions left unanswered once they leave the store.  The tag is placed along the neck line or other very noticeable place on the item in question.  With or without  the printed policy, it is obviously not a part of the item, and cannot just be tucked in and hidden while wearing it.  They also do not prevent the customer from trying on the merchandise at all.    They are meant to be removed at home, with a simple pair of household scissors.  Once removed, however, the item can no longer be returned.
The brilliance of this is so simple.  The customer is made aware they are to leave the Shark Tag on the item until they are absolutely sure they plan to keep it, because it cannot be reattached once the cut is made.  If they choose to wear the dress or use the accessory, then they will have to cut it off.  This eliminates the option of wearing it and showing it off, only to have buyer’s remorse or worse yet, the pure intention of using the item for the one night, with the sole purpose of returning it for a full or even partial refund.
The even better part of this device is that it works for traditional brick and mortar stores as well as the online retailer.  In today’s world, running all over to the different formal wear boutiques in your area is not the only option.   With a few clicks, today’s shopper can find that perfect dress, matching shoes, jewelry, and purse for their big event right from their home computer.  Shark Tags can be a huge win for the online only retailer, because the fact is, people find it a lot easier to ask for a fraudulent refund from someone they do not have to look in the eye.  They can fill in the return authorization paper, put the item in the box, seal it up, ship it back, and just wait on the credit to reappear in their account.
Shark Tags are the answer to this modern problem too.

Bag It Up With Checkpoint Tags

Valentine’s Day wasn’t that long ago, and I’ve been thinking about the gift that I bought my fiancé. She’d been going on and on about this particular high end purse that she “just had to have”. I’m not sure why… she has a closet full of purses. Anything to keep her happy, right? Well I have peer who is an LP manager at a large retailer and they happened to stock that same purse. I gave him a call to see if he was working a few days before V-Day, before I dropped into his store. We met up and caught up for a while before I asked him to show me where the purse display was. To my surprise, they were secured with a simple Checkpoint Tag.
I was intrigued. I would have thought that this retailer would put a bit more security around a $600 purse, so I asked my friend if they had a problem with theft. When we first got the purses in a few years back, the store had tried every tag, label and chain imaginable to secure the product. Whatever they did, the shoplifters seemed to defeat it, even cable locks. Someone in the corporate office suggested using the Checkpoint System that was already in the store to try and combat the losses. A few different types of Checkpoint Tags were tested, but the ink tags stood out as the most effective.
As with any high end apparel or accessory, you want to showcase the product in the most open way possible, but still balance the need for a physical security measure. The Checkpoint Tag accomplished both of those tasks. They were able to prominently display the bag, since it’s such a high profit item, all while keeping their security all but invisible. They placed the tag “inside out”, with the ink portion on the inside of the purse. When the shoplifter attempted to defeat the Checkpoint System, they found that it was secured with an ink tag, and would discard the product for fear of damaging it.
The store no longer found it necessary to secure the purses with bulky cables that detracted from the display, nor did they have to worry about a thief stealing all of the store’s stock. With just a minimal investment in tags in additional to the Checkpoint System that was already installed, the store was able to balance customer service and loss prevention in a way that kept both the store managers, the LP and customers very happy.
