Don’t Let Theft Be Easy At Convenience Stores
I know several people that have worked in the convenience store business. One was a former regional manager, one a store manager, and a couple of clerks, and they’ve all had similar experiences with shoplifting in their stores. With minimal staff on hand, it can be difficult to stop shoplifting in this environment. In the drug store world I work in, we have a number of tools at hand that are specifically made for retail theft prevention. Many of these tools can be transferred over to the convenience store atmosphere, if they are modified to fit that type of business. Now Checkpoint Systems has come up with this new tool, the Classic N10. They have kept the same reliable theft deterrence capabilities, but made the standard antennas into a smaller size.
Space is a premium in convenience stores. Displays have to be appealing, and the product mix has to draw in customers that may have only planned to stop for gas. There are a lot of novelty items that are carried and placed throughout the store. Specialty lighters, key chains, energy supplements, and even condoms are just a few examples. These items typically have a very high margin. Some items may be there on consignment for pay on scan, but many have already been purchased and they are part of the store’s inventory. In either case, you can’t afford to have this stuff walking out the door unpaid. With the Classic N10 mounted at the entrance, you send the message that your inventory is protected. The flashing LED lights also provide additional deterrence. Thieves want to get in and out without being noticed. Your staff can adhere Checkpoint tags to items you know will be targeted.
When you generally have only one employee in the store at any given time, it is almost impossible for them to be aware of everyone in the building and everything going on in there. It only takes them dealing with one difficult or needy person to be too distracted to notice that someone is stuffing a bunch of high dollar lighters in a big bag, or a teenager is about to run out with a case of beer. Many times a group will come in with just that intention. With Checkpoint Systems, you don’t have to worry about your clerk not noticing a theft. If it does occur, they will be immediately alerted, and they can call the authorities as soon as it happens. Otherwise, it could be hours later when the theft is finally discovered and the person responsible is long gone. The police will put much more effort into finding a suspect that just committed a crime and is most likely still close by, than they will into just riding around waiting and hoping. And that’s only if your store is equipped with a camera system that provides clear footage of the crime in the first place. Without a Checkpoint Security System, your business is vulnerable to losing valuable merchandise.
Too many independent convenience stores end up going under and out of business because they incur too much loss to stay afloat. Protect your store with the investment into the new Checkpoint Systems Classic N10. You and your P&L won’t be disappointed.

Bottle Locks-4 , Alpha Security-2 , Liquor Bottle Security-2, Bottle Lock-1
It Was The Bearded Guy, Not The One Armed Man
I am stunned at the number of liquor store thefts that occur on a daily basis. All I have to do is key it into a search engine, and boom, there they are. Now, in my career as a store manager for a small retail pharmacy, I have come to some conclusions. If thieves are successful, they will continue until they are stopped. In my store, one of the most effective tools we use to stop rampant theft was a product by Alpha Security. Alpha Keepers are clear boxes that we utilize to display the most commonly targeted items. This allows us to keep the items on the sales floor, and give the customer the freedom to pick it up from it’s home shelf location, instead of forcing them to come to the front to ask for it.
There are similar products by Alpha Security that are perfect for the business that needs liquor bottle security. They are called, very simply, bottle locks. They fit right over the top of almost any size bottle, and they are an ingenious way to protect the valuable inventory. Another great reason to invest in bottle locks is that they have different levels of alarm capabilities. They can self alarm if they are tampered with or if someone attempts to remove them without the proper key. They will also set off the Checkpoint System if someone attempts to take a protected bottle too close to the door. They also have the ability to continue to self alarm if a thief is able to successfully remove a protected bottle from the store. The fact is that the bottle lock is such a heavyweight, the bottle itself will likely shatter before the lock breaks. So the risk is not worth the reward, so this will not be a common problem.
I read a recent story from over the summer where a brazen theft could have been stopped by bottle locks. A bearded man walked into a liquor store and headed straight over to the expensive top shelf vodkas. He stood there a moment, and then picked up three 1.75 liter bottles, that retailed over $50 each. Then he walked straight out the front door. The staff never noticed him. A moment later a woman came in and said she had just seen a bearded man running toward a waiting car near their front door, carrying the three bottles. She thought it was odd. She was in her car passing by, but was so bothered by the scene, she turned around and came back to alert the staff. She asked them if they had just had a thief, and they started looking around. It didn’t take them very long to discover the empty space on the shelf where the vodka had been. Of course they called the police, but with this reactive type of behavior, he probably won’t be caught. They didn’t have a clear shot of him on camera, so their only hope is that someone will turn him in. So if you partied with a bearded man over the summer, and he served very expensive liquor, you may be able to get a handsome reward for his arrest. Otherwise, this guy got away and had a good time with $150 worth of free booze. If he had tried that with a store that used bottle locks, he would more likely have been caught, if he even tried the theft there at all.
Another great benefit of real liquor bottle security tools like these, is their power of deterrence. It’s much better to prevent the loss than deal with the thief and the court system.

The Numbers Don’t Lie: Checkpoint Systems Deter Theft
When I hire a new employee, whether a cashier or a supervisor, part of their initial training involves how to handle shoplifters. Most of the time, they look at me in disbelief when I tell them about the theft issues we battle in our small retail pharmacy. All I have to do is show them the pages of detail sheets where I have scanned empty packages into our pilferage file. Or , depending on the day of the week, I can show them the basket of empty packages under my desk waiting to be scanned. After we go through our apprehension rules, we walk the store and I show them our antishoplifting tools, like our Checkpoint Systems, all the different size Alpha keepers, spider wraps, etc. We go over each tool, how it is applied, how it is removed, and what items are more likely to be used with the tools because they are commonly targeted.
Shoplifting is one of the most common crimes in the country. People generally don’t look at it as a “big deal.” Most incidents of theft can be chalked up as simple greed. They want something and they don’t want to pay for it. Many retailers are trending away from apprehension and going with lenient policies. Their employees are paid more per hour than the item that was stolen is even worth, so they don’t see prosecution as worth the trouble. The justice system is flawed in how it handles shoplifters. There’s no denying that. I see it over and over; we call the police, have them cuffed and stuffed, go to court five or more times, and then the thief gets a slap on the wrist. I have had the officer not show up, or even worse, I forgot the court date and didn’t show up, and the charges get dismissed. This is all really frustrating for any retailer. But I still want to stop shoplifting. I don’t give up, and I don’t ever let my guard down. I abide by my companies policies, but I also educate my staff.
Statistically speaking, one in eleven people will steal something today. Those people are caught less than half of the times they do it, and will be prosecuted even less than half of those times. This just perpetuates the problem.
I am a store manager, not a baby sitter. I don’t have time to monitor every single person that walks through the store in order to keep them from stealing. Loss prevention is not so much about catching thieves and putting them behind bars. That’s where a lot of stores get confused. They want to put up threatening signs, hassle every person coming through their front door, and inconvenience their customers. You can’t keep honest cash paying customers loyal to your store by treating them like criminals. Loss prevention is about truly preventing the loss from happening in the first place. Deterrence is the key to loss prevention. That’s why I rely on my antishoplifting tools. In my store, Checkpoint Systems is always ready and on patrol. My staff knows our mandatory list of items that must have an EAS label adhered before being put out for sale. There are items that must be encased in Alpha keepers and or wrapped in an Alpha spider wrap as well. Honestly, the empty packages add up, and those probably only reflect a quarter or what is really stolen. However, I do know that the tools we utilize are making a difference. With the addition of these valuable security measures, our shrink results have been cut in half. Fraudulent refunds have gone down dramatically since they can’t steal the stuff in the first place. Word has gotten out in the community, and incidents of theft have dropped off considerably. The numbers don’t lie; we are winning the battle and we have our Checkpoint Systems and all the gadgets that work with it to thank for that.

What Kind Of Store Benefits From Checkpoint Systems?
What kind of store benefits from Checkpoint Systems? The short answer is any type. If you sell to the public and you allow people to freely browse in your building, then you will certainly see a return on your investment after installing genuine Checkpoint Systems. I see threatening signs hanging in convenience stores, thrift stores, upscale boutiques, grocery stores, and even gift shops. Just yesterday at a fall festival, I ventured inside a little shop that had a sign up that read: Free Ride In A Police Car If You Are Caught Stealing. What do you get if you don’t get caught? Free stuff. That’s the difference in stores that use signs and stores that use real tools for retail theft prevention.
I have been in convenience stores that utilize the signs too. They get tired of their novelty lighters and beef jerky disappearing, so they resort to using these scare tactics. Unfortunately, these stop very few people. When greed drives people to cross to the dark side, a sign is useless. Adhere some Checkpoint Labels to these items and then you send the message that you mean business. Most people are aware that in many states it is an automatic felony if they remove a tag. Boom. Then there are the expensive gift shops and boutiques. If you are the owner of a shop that sells retail inventory, then you have already shelled out plenty of money. When your merchandise walks out the door, you lose what you’ve already paid for plus the profit you would have gained from the sell. Your loss can be huge, depending on your mark-up percentage. With all the options available to you, it’s a no-brainer to take the plunge and take a look at what Checkpoint Systems can do for you.
In order to stop shoplifting, you have to be willing to put in the time and research to see what tools you need. There are Checkpoint Labels, as mentioned above. These are versatile labels that can be adhered to almost any package. They are available in many shapes, sizes, and colors. For the grocery store battling meat theft, there are labels for you too and they are even microwavable. If you are in the clothing and accessory business, they can be attached to the price labels, or even sewn into a pocket of seam. Of course, you may decide to go with the Checkpoint Tags. These can be attached as pins or even via lanyard. They are made to be strong, and their seams are tight so they reduce the temptation for the shoplifter to attempt to pry them apart. The pins do not harm the merchandise, and they are easily detached.
Either option you choose is going to work hard to deter theft from your operation. There is little training required for your store staff to become loss prevention experts. They will get to know what specific items in your store are targeted the most and they can then employ the tools you have to stop it from happening. When your customers come in they will immediately be greeted by the Checkpoint Systems pedestals and they will see the tools you use throughout the store. It sends a silent message that you are aware of the threat and you take it seriously. They will more than likely decide it’s not worth it to steal from you. That’s better than a free ride in a police car any day.

Due To Shoplifting, No Large Bags Allowed!
This was a sign I saw emblazoned on the front door of a local business just a couple days ago. It’s a new addition; I guess even our small town is not immune to theft. Of course, their answer to how to stop shoplifting- a sign banning large bags, isn’t exactly what I would call the best option. This is an antique store, not really the type of business that comes to my mind when I think of stores that need help with loss prevention measures. I work for a small retail pharmacy and we deal with rampant theft on a daily basis, so I definitely know their frustrations. Women carrying those “big shoplifter bags” are the arch nemesis for all of us I suppose!
The big difference in all the businesses that suffer from theft issues is what they do about it. I’ve been in stores that have these big threatening signs. “Smile, you’re on camera” “Shoplifters will be prosecuted” “No large bags” Those are some of the more common ones that are at least professionally worded. Some stores go way over board, making idle ridiculous threats. In my store, we only post the required signs alerting people that we do have cameras in use. Signs sell stuff, but they don’t really do a lot to stop shoplifting. Checkpoint Systems does, however, actually get the job done. Deterrence is the biggest key in putting thieves in their place.
Some people are going to steal no matter what. That is a small percentage of the population though. Most theft occurs when normal people walk in and see an opportunity. It is generally a basic example of greed, not need. With Checkpoint Systems, you take that opportunity away from them. The tools that work with the system, Checkpoint Labels and Checkpoint Tags, are the best ways to stop people from getting out the door with unpaid merchandise. Even the blogs that specialize in giving advice on how to get away with stealing tell people to steer clear of stores that utilize the tags. They tell them not to take the chance, because they will more than likely be caught and arrested. The tags can be hidden inside seams and pockets, and are not easily detected. When people come in the front door and see the Checkpoint Systems pedestals up there, they know that they can possibly be caught. I’ve dealt with all kinds of thieves. I’ve had the minors stealing junk, that I have had to detain and release to their parents. I’ve had the little old lady putting things in her purse, gets caught, and sends her preacher up to the store later to try and talk me out of a court date. I even caught another business owner from our town stealing over the counter sleep medications. When I confronted him at the front door, I made sure his wife was standing there with him. At first he tried denying it, but I showed him the picture I had just taken with my phone right off my camera monitors. That shut him up fast, and his wife was outraged! She yelled at him and told me they were a good family, and how sorry she was. I didn’t even call the police on that guy; I figured he would pay enough when he got home.
Checkpoint Systems puts a stop to so many thieves taking a chance on stealing from us, that it makes me wonder why more businesses don’t make that investment. The return is immediate, and Checkpoint Labels are easy to use. It takes little to no training and empowers your employees to make a real difference in your bottom line. The whole system is so much more effective than those pesky signs.
