Do you know the one thing I hate about working Loss Prevention in a store that carries apparel merchandise? Denim jeans. Not only do styles constantly change, they are one of the hottest theft targets there is. So many times have I had my day ruined by a shoplifter because they were able to get out with hundreds and thousands of dollars with just a couple pairs of jeans. I can remember working for my current company a few years ago, long before we installed our Checkpoint System. It was pretty much open season for shoplifting.
As a District LP Manager, I was in charge of a team of LP managers at about 15 stores across the south. Each one of those stores had a small LP team of about 3-4 associates. Every shoplifting case that was entered into our system came to me for final approval and it was my job to track trends and provide feedback to our corporate office on ways we could minimize losses in the stores. Enter denim jeans. As soon as a new style would hit the shelf, it was like we were sending out the bat signal to shoplifters. This was before we had the ability to use Checkpoint Tags, so you could probably imagine my frustration.
Day after day and week after week, it seemed like every shoplifting case I approved was for denim jeans. While my teams were certainly catching shoplifters, I knew that even more than that was still going on. The store would routinely conduct inventory counts at least once per month, and month after month the losses would just continue to pile up. I had enough of seeing it. It was time we got serious about protecting our products. I researched some options for a company of our size and I found that installing a Checkpoint system would be our best option.
Well, before I could pitch my idea at the next executive conference call, we got word that the company was in plans to install the Checkpoint System. Hey, at least I was looking at the same set up… I just couldn’t call it my idea. Within a few weeks, the new systems were rolled out to my stores and the first thing I did with my tote full of Checkpoint Tags was secure all of my denim jeans. The results were almost immediate and shrink began reducing overnight it seemed. This simple Checkpoint Tag was enough of a deterrent to stop some of our most prolific shoplifters.
