Taking It Too Far- Checkpoint Systems

Checkpoint Systems are a visual deterrent to stop shoplifting, but it should not overstep the boundaries of customer perception. Using EAS towers and tags is a common and expected retail tactic, however there is a point where you can take those visual deterrents too far.
Showing off your security to the point where it seems like you are bragging about it will do more than dissuade shoplifters to come into your store- it will also dissuade your paying customers.
Customers want to have an innate sense of safety as they walk through your store. They should not be worried that their purse will be stolen if they walk away from a shopping cart for a minute. They should not worry that they might be assaulted in a parking lot after dark. Having basic security and anti shoplifting features in place aides with the customer’s sense of safety.
Checkpoint systems and other anti shoplifting systems are expected to be present to stop shoplifting. Having working lights in a parking lot should also be an assumed expectation. Taking it too far by making even a paying customer feel uncomfortable because they are suspected of theft will not keep those customers coming back.

Right Of Passage- College Bookstore

Going off to colleges is one of many rights of passage for young adults as they transition into adult hood. It is the first real opportunity for many youth towards maintaining a sense of who they are as a person. They develop their own identities- some more honorable than others. As college bookstores can attest, some of these identities are riddle with a different right of passage- stealing books.
Many of these readers feel that stealing books, in particular for readers of certain authors or works, is a right of passage, or carries a certain clout within their social circle. For them, it is not just about having said that they read a book, it is about having said that they stole the book.
For others, it is an act of defiance as they think literature and information should be free to all, instead of sold for the sticker price.
That being said, these are the students that are causing the need for college bookstores to invest in bookstore security.
College bookstores need to implement bookstore security that is simple and at the same time predominately visible. The most common is a form of bookstore security is the combination of an anti theft device, such as an EAS label, and the towers at the doors.

Conversion Rate- Retail Traffic Counter System

One of the latest hot button topics for many retail businesses is conversion rate. Conversion rates are found using data from a retail traffic counter system like VisiPlus.
A conversion rate is the ratio between customer traffic (the number of people entering your store) and the number of transaction made during that same time frame.
The conversion rate is the next drill down of your store’s sales. It shows more than just whether or not you made the days sales. It lets you know how the customer traffic is actually purchasing, or not. This is one of the most beneficial reasons to using retail traffic counter systems like VisiPlus.
By looking at a conversion rate, you will be able to see several different patterns to your daily business. You can see from your retail traffic counter system if you have a high traffic count, but not many of them are buying, or they are making smaller dollar purchases. When this is the case, you want to focus your sales efforts on how to grow the individual sales.
Can you remerchandise to have small add on items near the register to increase your sales? Do you have a problem with your employees? When your staff is not engaging the customer, you risk losing sales because no one is there to help them.
Have you started locking up merchandise to prevent theft? Maybe investing in a Checkpoint system can help boost your sales while preventing shoplifting. Checkpoint systems allow for open merchandising, a proven sales booster, compared to putting high theft popular products behind a lock and key.
If you have a low traffic count and big sales, you have an opportunity to grow your business by marketing to bring more customers in. Focus on sales initiatives to drive customers into your store. An increase in traffic from your VisiPlus reports will easily show you if your marketing is working. Take a look at how safe your store is, you could be driving traffic away for things like parking lot lights not working, or too much evidence of theft. Again, a Checkpoint System will help remedy this situation.

Never Give Up Hope- Loss Prevention Workshop

During one particular Loss Prevention Workshop, I had a lady who was very upfront that the only reason she was working here was to get the employee discount. Needless to say, I quickly assumed that she would barely pay attention, much less remember anything that I was teaching her. Still, I didn’t dismiss her from the loss prevention training, I just made sure that I gave the best information I could hoping some of it would be retained.
Months later, she came unexpectedly barging into my office. They very first thing she said was “I remembered what you said during the loss prevention workshop regarding red flags…”
Sure enough, she did remember, much more than I think either of us would have expected her to. She was right in picking up on the warning signs. As a result, she stopped a loss of almost $1200 dollars. To this day, I am not sure about who had a greater sense of pride- her or me.
She was so proud of herself for doing something she never dreamed herself capable of. I was proud that I had given her the tools, in such a way that she remembered after all of those months, to be successful. Because I didn’t give up on her during the loss prevention training, she was able to be successful in a completely unexpected way.

Watch and Learn- Internal Theft

For businesses, having an in house surveillance system is a resource that greatly deters internal theft. Employees are more aware of a surveillance system tracking their every move when they are considering stealing cash or merchandise from their employer. Having a surveillance system will help you watch and learn what your employees are doing- even after you have left the building.
CCTV- closed circuit television- is a common form of surveillance system. It is a system of at least one or more cameras linked via a centralized monitor and recording device.
These systems can be as simple as a single camera overlooking the cash register with a TV and VCR. They can be as sophisticated as multiple cameras that move and tilt under a user’s control- liked via digital screens and recording devices. Whatever the actual set up is, having a surveillance system in place reduces the likelihood of internal theft.
For those that do attempt to steal from your business, there is a greater chance that the thefts had been recorded, and can be used to determine which employee stole what merchandise. This provides a resolution and recourse if you decide to terminate or prosecute that employee.
Many employee theft investigations have been resolved simply by a review of surveillance footage. More over, when you are seeking to prosecute these employees for employee theft, having more concrete evidence such as recorded surveillance can help you win the case.
