Stop The Shoplifter With Checkpoint Labels

Checkpoint Labels-3 , Stop Shoplifting-1, Electronic Article Surveillance-2
Stop The Shoplifter With Checkpoint Labels
I’ve been dealing with this one petty shoplifter for over a month now.  It turns out he is well known in our town,  and he has been banned from almost every other store.  When I called the police about him, we went into the office and I showed the officer the video of the theft.  He knew the guy’s name, where he lived, and everything about him.  We have an extensive electronic article surveillance system, and all the tools to go with it, so it was perplexing that we could not catch this one guy.
He would come into the store carrying a large back pack.  He would always tell the cashier he was just going to leave his back pack up front while he went to the restroom.  The cashier would tell him that was fine, and he would go to the rear aisles of the store, where the health and beauty products are displayed.  What the cashier didn’t ever seem to notice was that he never once actually went to the restroom.  He always wore cargo pants though, and he would first go to the trial size section.  Then he would go to our fragrance impressions display, steal several of them, and leave the empty packages behind.  He would fill his pants pockets with all the stuff, grab his bag from beside the checkout, and walk right out the door.  He was stealing about $50 worth of merchandise from us every time, so it was definitely adding up.
We knew we had to brainstorm to figure out how to successfully catch this guy and get him to stop shoplifting.  We first looked at all the times he had been in and made up a list of his most targeted items.  We thought he was possibly homeless because he always stole trial size toothpastes and deodorants.  And we also thought he may be stealing the fragrance bottles in order to sell them, and they were the majority of the problem anyway, because of their high retail.  We had to make them undesirable and unsellable for him.  First we added Checkpoint Labels to the packages.  We used them to seal the boxes shut and make them harder to open.  Since he was opening the boxes though and leaving them behind, we also had to think of a way to use our electronic article surveillance tools to stop that as well.  So we also have some different Checkpoint Labels that have our store name and address printed on them.  They work the same as the classic versions, but they are more useful in identifying where the stolen items came from.  That helps the police get your merchandise back to your store, and back on your shelves.  It’s great to get an arrest and make a recovery, and when your store information is printed on the labels, it makes the return much easier and faster.
So with our combined efforts and more awareness form our cashiers, we were able to finally catch him yesterday.  My cashier actually missed seeing him come in but saw him go out.  She quickly called me to the front, and I called the police immediately.  One officer came, and another went looking for the suspect.  They arrested him on the prior warrant I had taken out on him, and while they worked on that, I took out a new one for the latest larceny.  I had the list of items I suspected him of taking and I told the officer to look on the bottoms of the bottles for my specific Checkpoint Labels.  And guess what??  They were there just like I said.  I got my stuff back right there at the courthouse and brought it back with me.  And as for my thief… he spent last night in jail.

ALPHA JEWELLOKS – NOT JUST FOR JEWELRY!

I don’t normally find myself shopping for jewelry. For starters, I’m a guy. I don’t have any daughters and I hadn’t quite got to the point where I’m ready to “pop the question” to my girlfriend. I also don’t like chains, or watches myself. A few months ago, I got dragged… I mean, I accompanied said girlfriend to the mall. Love makes you do crazy things, right? I don’t care for malls either. It is funny for me to see how vastly different some retailers are in their strategies (or lack thereof) to prevent shoplifting. Some stores are like walking into Fort Knox, while others are basically an open field of daisies, just waiting for someone to come along and pick up and pocket whatever they wanted. Which style of retailer are you?

Hopefully, you’ve been able to find a balance. I chuckle at stores that go big on everything. Prevent shoplifting? Absolutely.  Look ridiculous with giant ink tags on $4 items? Also, absolutely?  We ended up in this store at some point in that wonderful day that, even if threatened with another day at the mall, I couldn’t tell you the name. I was however, quite impressed at their varied use of Alpha JewelLoks.

Throughout my professional career, I had come into contact with Alpha JewelLoks on a few occasions. In every platform that I’ve seen them used, it was to secure a piece of jewelry. With its hook made of hardened steel, this is the go-to tag for jewelry. Literally, you will break jewelry before you break the tag. I’ve seen it demonstrated (once on accident and once by an incredibly stupid thief). This store that I found myself in though, didn’t really carry jewelry.

These guys had figured out just how versatile the Alpha JewelLok was. Instead of placing a giant hulking tag on a small change purse, they simple used one of those tags through the pull tab on the zipper. Almost every item that was over $30 had an Alpha JewelLok. The tags are so small; you really didn’t notice them at all. I was impressed. They clearly were doing a heck of a job preventing shoplifting, all while maintaining a clean presentation of their product.

I thought back to my stores and what I could use these for. We have struggled for years with shrink in denim jeans. We’ve tried pencil tags, hard tags, soft tags and ink tags. All with varying degrees of success. When I got back to my store on Monday I ordered a case of these tags; I had an idea. Once in hand, I secured every single pair of denim jeans with them. I simply passed the hook through the pull tab on the zipper. I then tried really hard to cut the tag. First with scissors, then a nail clipper. Guess what? It hung in there! It’s been 3 months since I deployed the Alpha JewelLok and my shrink in denim has dropped nearly 2%. While this is definitely an unconventional use for them, I can say that it works. What other product can you secure in your store with these awesome little tags?

Stop Thieves from Profiting on Your Items With the iS Auto Peg Tag

Stop Thieves from Profiting on Your Items With the iS Auto Peg Tag
Do shoplifters take your merchandise simply to use for themselves? Do they just happen to “need” this item or that item? Did the shoplifter run short or just didn’t have the money to purchase today? Maybe; this is probably the case every now and then. But more and more we are seeing a new age of shoplifters entering our stores.  Sure we’ve all caught the juvenile stealing a candy bar or the teen stealing a pair of $5 dollar costume earrings.  The shoplifters I am talking about are the ones that are taking your merchandise and profiting from it. They’re not wheeling out flat screen televisions out the front of the store in large quantities. These thieves are taking your expensive pegged items. Those easy to pocket in a hurry items. Stop letting these items walk out the door with the iS Auto Peg Tag.
As discussed before, shoplifting is a crime of opportunity. Thieves will go after the easiest target in the store. Maybe that is a TV that is sitting on display right near the exit door without any other security items in place. But generally this is going to be the expensive easy target in your store. The type of shoplifters I’m talking about are not the teen or juvenile taking a candy bar. I’m talking about the thieves that are taking your items and reselling them for profit. They sell on auction sites, Craigslist, or out of the back of their vehicle.
So what items are the big target and how do we stop them? While your larger items such as a flat screen TV would seem like the ultimate score for these types of thieves, think again. These thieves are skilled in what they do. They’re not going to walk in the store on a hot day in a long trench coat fitting the “shoplifter stereotype.” They may even be very well dressed (probably stolen too). They don’t want to draw attention to themselves. The items they are going for are your expensive pegged items. Razor cartridges, ink cartridges, and batteries are just a few of the most common items taken. All these items are small, easy to pocket, and generate a lot of money for them. These items sell for upwards of $60 dollars each depending on the item. Now multiply that by 10, 20, or 50. That’s a lot of profit that just went out your door and now being sold for 100% profit to them.
The first rule in any type of crime prevention is a deterrent. If you think of the police just their car or the uniform they wear acts as a deterrent. How many times were you driving down a road and looked in the mirror and saw a police car behind you? You instantly start looking at your speed, and even get a little nervous. The last thing you’re going to do is break a law with the police right there. This is an example of a deterrent and it works. The Auto Peg Tag acts instantly as a deterrent to shoplifters but it’s much more than that.
The Auto Peg Tag is specially designed for your expensive pegged items. It goes right over the packaging in a one piece design and doesn’t require any special peg; in fact it can be used in a single or double peg hooks. They are reusable and easily taken off by your staff, yet very tough to defeat by a shoplifter.  They are available in RF, AM, and RFID formats.
Shoplifters don’t like to draw attention or spend much time on any one item. They will go after the easiest but most profitable item. Don’t keep letting your expensive pegged merchandise walk out the door. The iS Auto Peg Tag is your solution to keeping those profits in your pocket.

Employee Background Checks Make Knowledge Your Ally!

Employee Background Checks Make Knowledge Your Ally!
“What we don’t know won’t hurt us.”  “Ignorance is bliss.”  “Putting your head in the sand protects your head.”  “The unaware are innocent.”  We have all heard one or more of these anecdotes and probably have subscribed to their premises once or twice.  I submit to you though that there is at least one time when what we don’t know CAN hurt – maybe even destroy us.  That time is when we go to hire someone to work for us.  Courts have ruled again and again on “negligent hiring” or “negligent retention” citing that we have a duty to know or at least to try to know what risk a future employee might cause not only to our company but to our customers and public in general.  This requires us to exercise due diligence in trying to learn about future employees as we have shown again and again that past performance predicts future success.  One way to mitigate any potential damage and exercise good due diligence is to conduct employee background checks.
As a police commander I was involved in the hiring of police officers and we took this responsibility very seriously, conducting extensive checks through NCIC (National Crime Information Center) and the state criminal information system databases; driver’s history checks; extensive interviews with neighbors, employers, relatives, friends, and others; and administering a polygraph (lie detector) examination.  Unfortunately, we do not have the option of having trained investigators and confidential databases at our fingertips like law enforcement.
Pre-employment screening done by a reputable background check company can help us find out things about that applicant that we have a duty to know and give us the knowledge to make a sound hiring decision.  It has never been more important in our history than now to have a strong background check company that can navigate the legal waterways and get us our information ethically and legally.  How we conduct this process is being closely scrutinized in light of “ban the box” movements across the United States.
Ignorance is not an option.  I have seen many examples of “not knowing” hurting.  One example would be the employee who kidnapped a young girl and held her at his home for days at which time it was found out he was a convicted felon and pedophile.  Another might be the convicted felon who staged a robbery in our store and gave our money to the criminal gang with whom he was affiliated.  A third might be the incidents with racial unrest occurring in a store with gang graffiti showing up and then finding out that our manager was a convicted felon and leader of a major criminal street gang.  It would have been nice to know all of these things and we could have known and should have known if we had conducted a pre-employment screening.
Most of these were incidents of embarrassment but it could be worse.  There was the incident where a convicted felon was hired and sexually assaulted a female customer in the store during store hours.  He is serving a long criminal sentence but the female victim suffered lasting consequences from a sexually transmitted disease and the potential for civil liability still looms.  This is not unusual and is the chance you take if you decide to put your head in the sand and “not know.”  At least if you conduct employee background checks and find out information that might be a red flag you can make a hiring decision.  You can also include that information with your other screening tools and your interviews to make an intelligent decision as to whether or not this applicant is one you would like to take a risk on and bet your store.  That is what I said:  bet your store.  That is what some of us do when we ignore pre-employment screening or don’t rely on the results from our background check company.  We bet our store that the person is not going to do anything that will expose us to liability that could take away our store.
Employee background checks give us knowledge and remove our head from that hole in the sand.   We can’t make a good decision if we don’t know and we have to make a good decision.  Knowledge is our ally and ignorance our enemy!

WARDROBING ON THE RISE IN HARSH ECONOMIC TIMES

WARDROBING ON THE RISE IN HARSH ECONOMIC TIMES
Times are tough for most of us and many of us are doing what we have to do in order to save money. We’re clipping coupons, eating off of the dollar menu at fast food and even buying more efficient lightbulbs for our homes. Some people even cross the pasture of ethicalness right over in the valley of illegality. One of the most common forms of cutting back on the retail side is by engaging in wardrobing. This is quite simply where a customer will legitimately purchase an item of clothing and return it later after they are done using it. It may sound familiar to you as a retailer because if it’s going on in your store, it’s absolutely killing your revenues.
Is wardrobing illegal? Actually, although its considered to be unarguably unethical (and a form of return fraud) it’s not necessary illegal under the eyes of the law. Most jurisdictional courts would argue that a retailer’s posted return policy would supersede any legal ramifications of alleged fraud, directed from a retailer towards a return fraud committing consumer. In this sense, although the person trying to save a buck while acting immorally and wrong, they are just within the guidelines of the stores return policy. It’s sort of a ‘catch 22’ for the store. As a retailer it’s hard to offer comfort for purchases without at least having some sort of an offer in compromise or return policy. So what do you do? Get some Alpha Shark Tags!
These little devices when used with a matching return policy will deliver the much needed brakes to your out of control return fraud issue. Stores use the tags in order to not only assure that the merchandise being returned was purchased from the store but to ensure that customers aren’t just borrowing clothes from you and returning them later. They prevent wardrobing altogether and here’s how they work: The Shark tags attach to your garment in a conspicuous place. They simply take up a little real estate on the garment to let the customer know that it’s there. Once the customer purchases the piece of clothing and takes it home, they have a choice; remove the tag or bring it back to the store for a refund. If the stores return policy requires the Shark tags to be attached to the garment upon return and it is not, no refund will be issued. See the tag is visually obtrusive and too unflattering to worn ‘out on the town’. If the customer plans on using the garment, they’ll need to remove it or run the chance of looking ultra-tacky with a tag hanging off of their clothes. If they remove it, they cannot return it. Plain and simple.
Alpha Shark Tags aren’t meant to prevent direct retail theft in general. They are especially meant for reducing instances of fraud. There are no elements inside that act as triggers for store EAS (Electronic Article Surveillance) systems and it isn’t meant for a visual anti-shoplifting deterrent alone, in the usual sense. It simply lets the customer know that once it’s removed from the garment, it’s not eligible for a refund. These awesome little tags are available for tagging many different types of garments but are especially useful for ‘securing’ short term use garments like prom dresses, shoes, tuxedos, ties, furs and other like article of clothing. Alpha Shark Tags are meant to protect your final sale and your profit margin by reducing cases of return fraud at your service desk. This not only eliminates monetary loss but saves time by not having your associates bogged down with extra returns.
The bottom line is this; nobody wants to purchase new clothes when they have been worn by someone else. They want new, unsoiled, damage free garments. If you allow others to commit fraud by letting wardrobing go on in your store, you not only lose money because you’re having a hard time reselling used merchandise, you can also wind up with dissatisfied customers who wind up with soiled, used stuff. It’s a no-win situation for everyone. Get the Alpha Shark Tags; adjust your merchandise refund policy and your good to go!
