Unless it’s you – Checkpoint Security Tags

If you haven’t spent a lot of time with Checkpoint security tags, you may not truly understand just how beneficial they can be to your shop. I know that until I worked in retail security for a major company, I had no idea just how invaluable they are to a successful business.
I used to think that the Checkpoint security tags just registered an alarm if a shoplifter was trying to steal an item.  I was wrong; the tags do more than just stop shoplifting. These Checkpoint security tags are anti-shoplifting.
What’s the difference? If the tags were just to stop shoplifting, they would only be able to prevent shoplifters that are in the process of attempting to steal an item.
To be anti-shoplifting, means that the tags act as a deterrent also. Most shoplifters know that if an item has a tag on it, that item is not an easy target. That means that even before a shoplifter attempts to steal an item, they will stop and look for a tag. If the tag is present they will more often than not leave without a theft attempt. Better yet, they will go to a competitor that does not use security tags. Better – unless that competitor is you.

Bottom of Basket- Employee Theft

I remember working an employee theft investigation regarding a cashier, who was ringing up her boyfriend. Underneath his cart was about $300 dollars in product that she did not charge him for. Because she did not want to draw attention to this merchandise not being paid for, she left them under the cart.
Unfortunately for her, but lucky for us, she did not realize that the items had RF tags on them. When the boyfriend tried to leave, he set off the alarms at the door alerting everyone around to the situation.
I did some research as part of that employee theft case. The girlfriend had been passing off merchandise for several months. It was probably longer than that, but they had left a trail of paperwork that we could follow.
Some of the stolen goods were returned without a receipt so a merchandise credit was issued. Because it is an in store credit, we could track all of the purchases that card made.
Each time they used the merchandise card to pay for a transaction, we saw more merchandise being passed off at the register. They would then return that product and get a new merchandise store credit that we could track. And so the cycle was established.
It’s hard enough to think that one of your own employees has been stealing from you. It’s even harder to think that often, internal theft involves either multiple employees or an employee working with someone outside the company like a friend, a relative, or even a vendor.

New Year’s Resolution

The calendar turned over into 2013 and many of us usually make New Year’s Resolutions. One of the most used New Year’s Resolutions includes Shrink. This usually refers to shrinking our personal waist lines. However, when we talk about business shrink we usually refer to Retail Shrinkage. What is your New Year’s Resolution for addressing shrink in your store?

In 2001 shrink amounted to more than $31 billion and now hovers around $35 billion according to some recent studies. Shrink usually refers to loss by employee theft, shop-lifting, administrative errors and vendor fraud.

What are you planning on doing in 2013 to reduce your shrink numbers and improve your bottom line? Although the purchase of anti-shoplifting devices may seem expensive, a business owner can usually recover the initial expense of purchasing a Checkpoint security system and Checkpoint security tags or Checkpoint Security Labels, in a relatively short period of time.

You may think that you don’t need to deploy any anti-shoplifting devices in addition to the great customer services that your associates are providing. After your inventory count and looking at your financial statements for 2012, you may find that you are losing too much of your hard earned money by not deploying the technology offered by Checkpoint security systems and beefing up your retail theft prevention strategies.

A New Year’s resolution usually “wears” off shortly into the New Year. Don’t fall into the same trap when it comes to making changes to your bottom line. We don’t want it shrinking but increasing. And what better way to do that than by installing a Checkpoint Security System and changes to your retail theft prevention procedures.

Social Traces – Employment Background Checks

You probably know what background checks are… you might have even had one run on you. But do you really know what it means? And if you’re in HR assisting with your company’s hiring management… do you know what you’re asking for when you use a service for “Background checks”?

How about “social trace”? Ever heard of that? No, it’s not a new thing on Facebook or Twitter. It’s a check that’s run on an individual’s social security number that allows you to know what states the person has lived in and what other names they could have used. Sometimes, we get a red flag because a female’s maiden name wasn’t listed and pops up as an alias, which is pretty common and obviously nothing to worry about… but other times, we get a red flag on a social trace because the individual has used entirely different aliases—not misspellings, completely different names!

We see it all around here. There’s no telling what a new day will bring. But for you, and your company, trust us when we say that it’s better if we find out first. After all, that’s what we’re here for! And remember, if you’re not running a social security trace on your potential new hires, you could be missing out on crucial information that will keep your workplace environment safe and happy.
